Descend into the depths to Wookey Hole – home to ancient legends, stunning rock formations and a spooky tale or two.
Set in the scenic Mendip Hills, Wookey Hole is a family-favourite day out in Somerset for us at Unity Beach!
So, the story goes, there was once a woman who lived in the Wookey Hole Caves nearly 1,000 years ago who was accused of witchcraft by the local villagers. They blamed her for every misfortune: failing crops, dying cattle, mysterious disappearances – you name it, she was blamed for it.
Eventually, an abbot came, armed with holy objects with which he planned to deal with this witch once and for all. He chased the poor woman through the caves, sprinkling holy water as he went, until a blood-curdling scream echoed through the air… and then silence.
When the abbot looked up, he saw that the Witch had turned to stone!
The abbot returned home victorious, believing he had rid the village of its greatest menace – but perhaps the witch had the last laugh. Centuries later, her story endures and visitors still flock to the Wookey Hole caves to see her petrified body.
Explore thousands of years of history through eight stunning chambers, plus many more still waiting to be fully discovered.
If spooky tails of witches lurking underground don’t quite float your boat, not to worry – a day out to Wookey Hole still has plenty to offer.
For example, have you ever wanted to meet a dinosaur? At Wookey Hole’s Dinosaur Valley, you can get up close with these amazing creatures! Unleash your inner archaeologist and uncover ancient bones below.
Or why not enjoy a round of Adventure Golf included with your visit. Perfect for a swashbuckling mini golf adventure.
For thrill-seekers, the Wild Wookey experience has an award-winning caving adventure for explorers ready to crawl, climb and abseil where regular visitors cannot go.
And last but not least, visit the Wookey Hole Museum to learn about the location’s rich history and the latest finds from the caves.
