Shambles and shopping

The Shambles is one of Yorkshire’s most famous landmarks and has one of the best-preserved medieval shopping streets in Europe. It’s believed to be the inspiration for Diagon Alley in the Harry Potter series!

Today, many of the old buildings have been restored and house cheerful cafés, quirky boutiques and even a coin & stamp dealer.

Did you know that York was once known as the “Chocolate city” and the air was thick with chocolate dust? At certain shops in York, you can still taste and even create your own chocolate!

Free things to do! 

There are loads of free things to do in York! Why not visit York Art Gallery, or there’s the fascinating National Railway Museum. It tells the story of rail transport in Britain and showcases an unparalleled collection of railway vehicles, artifacts and memorabilia – great even if you’re not a big train fan.

For a bit of fresh air and excellent views, walk along the Old City Walls, which have protected the city since Roman times.
