Award-winning beaches, top attractions and a vibrant town centre – Scarborough really does have it all!
Found on Yorkshire’s dramatic east coast, Scarborough Beach is a classic seaside escape with plenty of things to do during a day out from Skirlington Coast.
Famed for its twin bays, you’ll find arcades, donkey rides and ice cream stalls in the South Bay, and wide sands and colourful huts to the north. Just above the beach, there’s Scarborough Castle, Peasholm Park, the Rotunda Museum, the Open-Air Theatre and much more. It’s the perfect blend of classic seaside fun, surrounded by a rich history and culture.
Scarborough’s South Bay is one of the reasons why it’s known as the seaside town. It’s packed full with amusements, restaurants, fresh seafood, ice cream parlours, shops and donkey rides – as well as the beach itself! It’s also home to Scarborough’s harbour, filled with pleasure boats and fishing trawlers.
The South Bay is patrolled by an RNLI qualified lifeguard service during the summer season. Dog restrictions also apply to this beach between 1 May and 30 September.
The North Bay is the quieter twin. Picture this… wide sands, colourful beach huts and a more relaxed vibe for family strolls, rock-pooling or sandcastle building. That said, the North Bay is a great location for water sport enthusiasts, especially surfers!
Enjoy a classic day by the seaside and keep your eyes peeled for seals around the harbour and slipway.
Atop the dramatic headland, Scarborough Castle conceals over 3,000 years of turbulent history dating right back to the bronze age. They say King Richard III enjoyed the view from the battlements so much that he still walks them today.
For curious kids and adults, the Rotunda Museum has one of the UK’s finest collections of Jurassic fossils. When you visit, you can also come face to face with the incredible creatures who once called Yorkshire home in the Ancient Seas Gallery.
Prefer a peaceful day in the park? Peasholm Park is a serene, oriental-inspired escape featuring a boating lake, pagoda and tranquil trails. The park is also home to the world-famous Naval Warfare (July and August) – a unique miniature sea battle which takes place on the lake.
Still searching for more? Hop aboard the North Bay Railway or catch a show under the stars at the Scarborough Open Air Theatre, a grand venue which has welcomed audiences since 1932.
